Sankey Valley St James’ Voluntary Aided Primary School.
Admission Policy 2012 -2013

Sankey Valley St James’ Voluntary Aided Primary School is in the Diocese of Liverpool. The ethos of the school is based on Christian principles and is guided by the teachings of the Church of England.
A) The Governors, who are responsible for dmissions to the school, have agreed with the Local Education Authority and the Diocese to admit thirty pupils for each year group. These arrangements and the admission criteria are reviewed annually.
When there are more applications than there are places available the Governors will admit pupils according to the following criteria, which are set out in order of priority
below.
1) Children in Public Care.
2) Children with proven and exceptional medical and social needs where admission to the school might best help satisfy those exceptional needs, providing that such an application is submitted with appropriate evidence or reports from a doctor or social worker.
3) Siblings (pupils with older brothers or sisters already attending the preferred school and expected to continue at the school in the following year). This includes full, half or step brothers or sisters and foster brothers and sisters who are living at the same address as part of the same family unit.
4) Children whose family is actively involved in the life and worship of St. James’ Church or in another church as recognised by Churches Together in England and Ireland and confirmed by reference from the local Minister. A letter from the Minister will be presented to support this category
5) Children who reside in the Parish of St James.
6) Children who do not meet any of the above criteria.
Please Note
In the event of any oversubscription
in the number of applications made under any of
the categories above, then the admissions committee will offer places first to pupils living nearest to the school as measured by the Geographical Information Address Point System, based on Ordnance Survey. The school utilises the services of Warrington Local Authority for this process.

If more applications are received than can be accepted, the Admissions Panel will draw up a reserve list in order that steps to fill unexpected vacancies can be taken more quickly.

Timetable for admission
The timetable will follow that set out by Warrington Local Authority.

Appeals
Parents of children to whom places are not offered have the right to appeal against the decision. In this eventuality parents must give notice of appeal in writing to the Chairman of Governors, Sankey Valley St. James’ Aided Primary School, Dorchester Road, Great Sankey, Warrington WA5 1XE within 21 days of the date of the decision.
Appeals are heard by an Appeals Committee, set up through the Local Authority. The procedure of the Appeals Committee will be in accordance with the provision of the Schools Standards and Frameworks Act 1998 as amended by the Education Act 2002.
Parents may attend the hearing of their appeal and may be accompanied by a friend. They will be notified of the arrangements for the hearing and will be informed of their rights by the Clerk to the Schools Appeals Panel who is based in the Council’s Chief Executive’s Department.

Waiting List
A waiting list, prioritised in oversubscription criteria order, will be held until the end of the Autumn Term 2012.

Application Procedure
As well as completing the school admissions form parents/guardians will be asked to complete a Local Authority preference form. The local Authority preference form must be returned direct to the Local Authority. The school’s supplementary information form should be returned to the school. It should be noted that registration of an application for admission should not be interpreted as a guarantee of admission. If a child is attending the nursery, parents need to note that they do not have an automatic right to transfer to the primary school to which the nursery is attached. Application for admission to the school has to be made in accordance with the procedure set out above.

Deferred Entry
Children are required to begin school in the term following their fifth birthday, however traditionally they begin in the school year they attain the age of five. Parents can request that the date their child is admitted to school is deferred until later in the school year or until the child reaches compulsory school age in that school year. In these circumstances a place is reserved and it is not available for another child provided the place is taken up during that same academic year.
The above applies to deferred entry but the Governors will operate the criteria set out in Section A, of the document for all other admissions, and the appeals procedure will apply.
Admission criteria are reviewed by the governing Body each year.
