Where do raindrops come from?

Week 1: Where is water found on the Earth?

We will be using Google Earth to locate the main bodies of water on Earth. The key words that the children will need to be familiar with will be looked into e.g. source, lake, river, estuary, stream and ocean.

Week 2: Why is there more rain in some parts of the world than others?

The children will be investigating evaporation and condensation as well as comparing and contrasting the areas on Earth that have a lot of rain with those that have little rain.

Week 3: How does where water is affect peoples lives?

The children will use a range of sources to find out why
people settle near rivers and the sea. The impact of having little water will be discussed. Additionally we will also look at how water is important in tourism e.g. cruising, skiing and beach holidays.

Week 4: How is Global warming affecting rain?

Firstly we will find out what Global warming is before we investigate its impact on both the environment and living things. Linked to this in Science we will find out what makes a good insulator.

Week 5: How are people and the environment affected by extreme weather?

Tornadoes, hurricanes and flooding  are some of the extreme weather events that the children will be researching. We will also focus on the recovery of both people and the environment following an extreme weather disaster.

Week 6: How does it rain?

In the final week of our topic the children will find out all about the water cycle. As part of their work in literacy they will write the story of a water droplet as it travels through the water cycle.
