Class 2C - Year 5 Curriculum                 Back to curriculum

Welcome to Year 5!

Where does a raindrop come from?

Week 1: Where is water found on the Earth?

We will be using some new key vocabulary such as: estuary, erosion, mouth, source, river, stream, lake, meander and tributary.  Also, we will use Google Earth and atlases to find the main bodies of water on Earth.  We will learn about how rivers shape the landscape and which plants and animals live in rivers and oceans.

Week 2: Why is there more rain in some parts of the World than in others?

We will be investigating evaporation and condensation, as well as comparing and contrasting areas that have rain with places that have little rainfall.  Also, we will explore weather in other parts of the World and how animals adapt to living in different environments.

Week 3: How does where water is affect peoples lives?

We will find out why people settle and live near rivers and the sea, both locally and globally.  We will also look at the impact on people with enough water and those who don't have enough water.  Finally, we will see how tourism is affected by water.  For example: cruises, skiing and beach holidays.

Week 4: How is global warming affecting rain?

We will find out what global warming means and its impact on the environment and animals.  In science, we will find out about changing state and insulation.
Week 5: How are people and the environment affected by extreme weather?

We will be investigating extreme weather such as tsunami, hurricane and flooding and creating a Powerpoint presentation all about it.  Also, we will look at the local and global impact of flooding and how people recover from an extreme weather disaster.

Week 6: How does it rain?

During the final week of our topic, we will be learning about the water cycle.  In literacy, we will write a story about the adventure of a water droplet travelling through the water cycle.  Finally, in D&T lessons, we will make a 3D model of the water cycle.
