Where is Africa and what is it like there?

We are a mixed year 4 and 5 class.  This half term we are finding out all about life in Africa

Africa is the world's second-largest continent after Asia.  It is hard to generalize about Africa, because its is very different throughout the continent, and each of its 53 countries is unique.  We are going to be focusing on South Africa.  

Some facts for you!

  • Africa covers 6% of the Earth's total surface area and 20.4% of the total land area.
  • A billion people (as of 2009) live there and it accounts for about 14.72% of the World's human population.
  • Africa is surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea, the Suez Canal, the Red Sea, the Indian Ocean and the Atlantic Ocean.

  • There are 53 countries.

How long would it take to get to South Africa?  

The approximate distance as the crow flies from Warrington to Cape Town is 6137 miles  

Warrington to Johannesburg is about 5778 miles - a long way!  

In a plane it would take more than 12 hours to fly there.
