Week 1 Why was the Mary Rose Henry VIII’s favourite ship? We will be finding out who Henry Vlll was, why he had ships and who his enemies were. This is a painting of his favourite ship 'Mary Rose'.

Week 3 Why were many ships loaded with treasure and artillery?

Week 4 What was it like to be a cabin boy on these big ships? What do you think the cabin boys did? How old were they? How many hours did they have to work?

Week 5 How did they keep food fresh on board a ship? This week we will look in detail at the role of the ship cook. How he kept food edible, the methods used. How he would decide what to make. Here are some of the tools used in cooking. The bellows were used to keep the galley fires burning. The mortar is a heavy bronze bowl for grinding herbs and spices in. The ladle was used to scoop the food out of the cauldrons. The little cooking pot was probably used for cooking meals for the senior officers. |
Week 6 What were the major and minor illnesses on board a ship? The barber - surgeon was responsible for the health of the crew on board. Why was it dangerous to travel by sea? We will be answering this question by thinking about everything we have covered this hallf term
